Fastener Material & Coating Tips: A Quick Guide for Your Next Project

Picking the right screw or bolt seems simple until it rusts out of your deck two years early or seizes into pressure-treated lumber. The fix isn't a fancier fastener — it's matching the material and coating to the job. Here's what actually matters.
Start with the Base Material
Carbon steel is the workhorse: strong, affordable, and fine for indoor framing or anything that stays dry. On its own, though, it rusts fast, so it almost always needs a protective coating (more on that below).
Stainless steel costs more but resists corrosion on its own, thanks to its chromium content. For outdoor decks, marine hardware, or anything near water, look for Type 304 (good all-around corrosion resistance) or Type 316 (better for saltwater and coastal environments). If a project touches moisture and you don't want to think about it again, stainless is usually worth the upcharge.
Rule of thumb: dry and indoors, carbon steel is fine. Wet, outdoor, or high-stakes (structural, marine), spend the extra money on stainless.

Coatings: Zinc Plating vs. Hot-Dip Galvanized
Both use zinc, but they're not interchangeable.
Zinc plating (electroplated) is a thin coating applied electrically. It looks clean, is inexpensive, and works fine for indoor or low-exposure applications. It won't hold up to sustained outdoor weather.
Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) dunks fasteners in molten zinc, creating a much thicker, metallurgically bonded coating — roughly five times the protection of standard zinc plating. It's the standard for decks, fences, and anything living outside long-term.
Quick gut check: if you'd be upset finding rust streaks in a year, skip zinc plating and go HDG or stainless.
The Pressure-Treated Lumber Trap
This one catches a lot of DIYers. Modern pressure-treated lumber (ACQ or CA-treated) contains high levels of copper, which accelerates corrosion in most standard fasteners — including regular zinc-plated screws. Building codes (IRC R317.3) require fasteners in contact with treated wood to be one of: hot-dip galvanized meeting ASTM A153 (minimum G185 coating), stainless steel (304 or 316), silicon bronze, or copper. If your deck screws don't say one of those on the box, they're not code-compliant for treated lumber — and they'll likely fail early.
Don't Mix Metals
A quieter problem: galvanic corrosion. When two dissimilar metals touch in the presence of moisture, one corrodes faster to protect the other. Using plain steel fasteners with copper flashing, or stainless fasteners against certain aluminum, can accelerate corrosion at the joint. When in doubt, match your fastener metal family to what it's touching, or stick with stainless and hot-dip galvanized, which play well with most common building materials.
Quick Reference
Indoor, dry, low-stress: carbon steel, zinc-plated. Outdoor, general exposure: hot-dip galvanized. Decks, treated lumber, coastal, or marine: stainless steel (304/316) or HDG rated for treated wood. Anywhere two different metals meet moisture: check compatibility before you commit.
Getting this right upfront costs a little more per fastener but saves you from callbacks, rust stains, and re-doing work down the line.
